Basilica cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta

The Cathedral of the Assumption in central Savona serves as the seat of the Diocese of Savona-Noli and holds the rank of a minor basilica. Construction began in 1584, replacing an earlier medieval church, and its completion coincided with the Counter-Reformation period when the Catholic Church invested heavily in imposing new sacred buildings across Liguria. The Baroque structure follows the restrained idiom of the Lombard-Ligurian school, with a composed facade and a richly decorated interior dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Designated an Italian national monument, the cathedral anchors the religious life of the historic city center, surrounded by the narrow lanes of Savona's old town.
