Minor Basilica of the Holy Child

The Basilica del Santo Niño in the heart of Cebu City is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Philippines, built on the site where one of the country's most venerated relics was discovered. Ferdinand Magellan presented the carved wooden image of the Holy Child to Queen Hara Humamay upon her baptism on April 14, 1521 — shortly before his death in the Battle of Mactan. When Miguel López de Legazpi's forces burned the settlement of Cebu 44 years later, the figure was found unharmed in the ruins, an event interpreted as miraculous that prompted the construction of the first church on the site. The current Baroque structure dates to 1739 and is a designated national cultural treasure. Every January, the Sinulog festival draws millions of pilgrims and participants in one of Asia's largest religious processions; the Santo Niño image itself remains on permanent display in a chapel inside, surrounded daily by devotees.
