Basilica of Begoña

The Basilica of Our Lady of Begoña is a Gothic church crowning a hill above Bilbao's old quarter and the principal Marian shrine of the Diocese of Bilbao. Built across the 16th and 17th centuries, it holds the papal title of minor basilica and is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural, Spain's highest category of national heritage designation. The Virgin of Begoña is venerated as the patron of Bizkaia, and on her feast day each August 15th pilgrims climb the hill in procession from across the Basque Country — a tradition that has continued for centuries. The interior retains its Gothic vaulting alongside a richly decorated Marian shrine, offering a meditative contrast to the urban bustle of Bilbao below.
