Basilica Palladiana

The Basilica Palladiana on Vicenza's Piazza dei Signori is widely considered Andrea Palladio's first major public commission and a cornerstone of European Renaissance architecture. Appointed in 1549 to stabilize the crumbling loggias of the existing medieval Palazzo della Ragione, Palladio wrapped the structure in a two-story colonnade using the tripartite arch motif now known as the Palladian window — a solution so influential it shaped public buildings from London to Washington. The building has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage inscription 'City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto' since 1994. Today it houses temporary art and architecture exhibitions, and the rooftop terrace offers an overlooked panoramic view across the old town's terracotta roofscape.
