Sacrario Militare del Monte Grappa

The Sacrario Militare del Monte Grappa sits on the 1,775-metre summit of Monte Grappa in the Veneto and is Italy's largest World War I ossuary. Arranged in concentric semicircular rows, the memorial holds the remains of roughly 22,900 soldiers — Italians and Austro-Hungarians alike — many of them fallen during the pivotal 1918 Battle of Vittorio Veneto that ended the war on the Italian front. Completed in 1935 under Mussolini's regime, the monumental terraced structure was deliberately designed as a piece of nationalist symbolism. Reaching the memorial requires a mountain hike rewarded by sweeping panoramic views across the Venetian plain and toward the Dolomites. Inside the ossuary, named headstones give way to anonymous communal chambers — a contrast that lends the site an atmosphere of quiet unease.
