Basilica San Saturnino

The Basilica of San Saturnino in Cagliari is among the oldest surviving church ruins in the western Mediterranean — a 5th-century early Christian cross-domed structure built on the site of Roman Carales. It was dedicated to the martyr Saturninus, reputedly executed under Emperor Diocletian, and its distinctive Byzantine cupola became the direct architectural model for subsequent Byzantine churches across Sardinia. Designated an Italian national monument, the ruin is open only on Mondays and Thursdays between 9 and 13:00, giving it a quietly uncrowded atmosphere rare for a site of this antiquity. The contrast between its crumbling late-antique masonry and the surrounding modern city makes for an unexpectedly contemplative visit.
