Baqirha

Baqirha is an ancient ruined settlement in the Dead Cities region of northwest Syria, part of the UNESCO World Heritage landscape inscribed in 2011 that encompasses over 700 abandoned villages dating from the 1st to the 7th century CE. The site preserves the remains of a Roman-era temple alongside two early Byzantine churches and several residential structures — rare physical evidence of the transition from pagan Roman provincial life to early Christian Byzantium. Because the settlement was abandoned rather than built over, its stonework survives in an unusually legible state, making it a significant reference point for archaeologists studying late-antique domestic and religious architecture. The surrounding basalt plateau of Jabal al-Ala lends the site an eerie stillness that distinguishes it from more visited ruins in the region.
