Shrine of Our Lady of Bonaria

The Basilica of Our Lady of Bonaria in Cagliari forms the spiritual heart of Sardinia's largest pilgrimage complex, together with the older Santuario di Bonaria and the Mercedarian monastery. The site dates to 1324, when the Mercedarian order established a chapel on the Bonaria hill; the neoclassical basilica was added to the ensemble in later centuries. At the center of devotion stands a wooden statue of the Madonna, which legend holds was found floating at sea in 1370 aboard a drifting ship in distress off the Sardinian coast — it has been venerated as patroness of the island and of seafarers ever since. Pope John Paul II visited the shrine in 1990, underlining its significance beyond regional devotion. The hilltop complex draws pilgrims throughout the year, with major feast days bringing thousands of faithful to Cagliari.
