Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady

The Basilica of Santa María de la Asunción is a Roman Catholic parish church perched on a rocky promontory above the Río Guadalete in Arcos de la Frontera, Andalusia. Originally constructed in the Mudéjar style during the 14th or 15th century, the church underwent a sweeping interior transformation in the first half of the 16th century that remade it into a late-Gothic hall church, with ribbed vaulting largely supplanting its Moorish structural origins. The west facade layers Gothic portal work alongside Renaissance and Baroque decorative elements, a condensed visual record of the stylistic currents that swept Andalusia after the Reconquista. Granted the title of Basilica minor by the Diocese of Asidonia-Jerez and protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural, it remains an active parish church — visitors can read six centuries of architectural ambition in a single building.
