Engelberg Abbey

Engelberg Abbey is one of Switzerland's most significant Benedictine monasteries, originally founded in 1120. The current abbey church is a Baroque reconstruction designed by Caspar Moosbrugger following a catastrophic fire in 1729, replacing the medieval structure while preserving the community's unbroken monastic lineage. The monastery was historically an important center of learning and manuscript production, and its library still holds illuminated manuscripts from the 12th century. Classified as a Swiss cultural heritage site of national importance (Class A), the abbey remains home to an active community of Benedictine monks living by the Rule of St. Benedict. Visitors can tour the ornate Baroque church, browse the monastery shop selling produce made by the monks, and join guided tours — a living monastery rather than a museum piece.
