Saint Augustin Basilica

This minor basilica in southern Annaba — ancient Hippo Regius — was built in 1881 during the French colonial period and dedicated to Saint Augustine of Hippo, who served as bishop here from 396 until his death in 430. Augustine died in the city while it was under siege by the Vandals, a moment that marked the effective collapse of the North African church province he had spent decades shaping. His remains were later moved to San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro in Pavia, Italy, yet Annaba remains his primary spiritual site. The church functions as the pro-cathedral of the Diocese of Constantine-Hippone and draws theologians, church historians, and pilgrims tracing the footsteps of one of Christianity's most formative thinkers.
