Basilika St. Mauritius

The Basilica of St. Mauritius is the monastic church of the Benedictine Abbey of Niederaltaich, set on the banks of the Danube in Lower Bavaria and dedicated to the early Christian martyr Maurice and his companions. The abbey was most likely founded between 744 and 747 by Duke Odilo of Bavaria, making it one of the oldest Benedictine communities in Bavaria with nearly 1,300 years of unbroken monastic life. The present church building is Baroque in style and listed as a protected monument under Bavarian heritage law. The abbey remains an active religious community today, running the local St. Gotthard secondary school and maintaining the Benedictine tradition of the Liturgy of the Hours. The church is fully wheelchair accessible.
