Abbaye de Jumièges
Sacred SpaceRomanesqueAbbey Ruins+8
The former Benedictine abbey of Saint-Guénolé in Landévennec, on the Crozon peninsula in Brittany, is one of the oldest Christian sites in France and a classified historic monument. Founded in the 5th century by the Welsh monk Guénolé, it was repeatedly destroyed — first by Viking raids in the 9th century, then during the upheaval of the French Revolution. The surviving Romanesque ruins, including medieval arcades and wall fragments, are freely accessible and complemented by an on-site museum dedicated to the history of Breton monasticism. The grounds carry a pronounced stillness that speaks to over a millennium of monastic life once practiced here.
