Basilica of Our Lady of Graces

The Basilica of Our Lady of Graces stands in the small town of Sardhana, about 19 km northwest of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, and ranks among the most significant Catholic churches in northern India. It was commissioned in 1822 by Begum Samru — a remarkable figure who rose from obscure origins to become the ruler of Sardhana, converted to Catholicism, and dedicated the church as an act of devotion to the Virgin Mary. The white marble structure, with its classicist colonnades and grand portico, reads like a piece of European ecclesiastical architecture transplanted into the North Indian plains. Granted the title of basilica minor in 1961, the church draws thousands of pilgrims from across the region during Marian feasts and remains a spiritual anchor for the Christian communities of western Uttar Pradesh.
