St. Anne's Church, Bukit Mertajam

St. Anne's Basilica in Bukit Mertajam, on peninsular Malaysia, is a Roman Catholic church founded in 1888 under the Diocese of Penang. It is dedicated to Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, whose veneration runs particularly deep in Southeast Asian folk Catholicism. Every year in late July, the church becomes the focal point of one of Southeast Asia's largest Christian pilgrimages, drawing over 100,000 devotees from Malaysia and neighboring countries including Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam. Outside the festival, it functions as a quiet place of devotion — a Catholic landmark within a predominantly Buddhist and Muslim region, giving it a distinctive intercultural presence in Penang.
