Poondi Madha Basilica
The Poondi Madha Basilica sits in the hamlet of Poondi, Tamil Nadu, nestled between the Kaveri and Colleroon rivers within the Diocese of Kumbakonam. Its neogothic facade rises unexpectedly in a quiet rural landscape, giving the site a withdrawn, contemplative character quite distinct from urban church complexes. As one of South India's notable Marian pilgrimage centers — dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes — the basilica draws tens of thousands of pilgrims annually from across Tamil Nadu and neighboring states, with the February feast days transforming the otherwise tranquil hamlet into a busy pilgrimage camp. The surrounding riverine setting between two branches of the Kaveri River adds a distinctive natural frame to the devotional experience.
