Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption, St. Hermagoras and St. Fortunatus

The Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta in Aquileia is one of the most important early Christian monuments in Europe, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. Its origins trace to the early 4th century, when Bishop Theodorus commissioned the first church on this site — the surviving floor mosaics from that era cover over 700 square meters, making them among the largest and best-preserved early Christian mosaic floors in existence. The present Romanesque structure was rebuilt in the 11th century under Patriarch Poppone and includes a crypt richly decorated with early medieval frescoes. For centuries the seat of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, the basilica held enormous religious influence across the northern Adriatic. Today visitors encounter a rare layering of Late Antique mosaic art, Romanesque architecture, and medieval crypt within a single building.
