Basilica of Our Lady of Luján

The Basilica of Our Lady of Luján is Argentina's most important pilgrimage church and national shrine, located in the town of Luján some 65 kilometres west of Buenos Aires. Built between 1887 and 1935 in a style modelled on European Gothic cathedrals, its twin neo-Gothic towers and ornate stone facade cut a striking contrast against the flat Pampas landscape. Veneration of a small terracotta figure of the Immaculate Conception — brought to the site in the 17th century under circumstances considered miraculous — transformed Luján into the spiritual heart of the nation. Each year several million pilgrims visit, many completing the 60-kilometre walk from Buenos Aires on foot. Recognised as a national historical monument, the basilica holds a significance that extends well beyond Argentina's Catholic majority into broader national identity.
