Basilique de l'Immaculée Conception

The Basilique de l'Immaculée Conception is a neogothic minor basilica in Ouidah, a coastal town in southern Benin, administered under the Archdiocese of Cotonou. Built in 1909 during the French colonial period, the church bears clear traces of Portuguese Catholic influence — Ouidah was historically a major hub of the Atlantic slave trade, and Portuguese merchants were among the earliest to introduce Catholicism to the region. The basilica's towering facade rises conspicuously over the low-lying townscape, making it one of the most prominent examples of European ecclesiastical architecture in West Africa. Notably, Ouidah is also the spiritual homeland of the Vodun religion, placing this Catholic church in a rare and layered spiritual landscape where two very different traditions coexist.
