Basilica of Our Lady of Carmel, Campinas

The Basilica of Our Lady of Carmel — locally known as the Carmo church — stands at Largo do Carmo in the historic center of Campinas, Brazil, and holds the title of a minor basilica. Originally built in the 18th century as a colonial parish church, it served as the founding mother church around which Campinas itself grew as a settlement. The current structure dates from a substantial neogothic reconstruction carried out in the 1920s, explaining its slender towers and gothicizing facade details — a style typical of Brazilian churches of that era blending European ecclesiastical forms with local building history. As a parish church of the Archdiocese of Campinas, it remains an active site of Marian devotion, particularly for followers of the Carmelite tradition. The square in front, Largo do Carmo, is one of the quieter gathering points in Campinas's otherwise busy city center.
