Bastille

The Bastille sits on a limestone ridge 476 metres above Grenoble, forming a layered fortress whose foundations reach back to 15th-century defensive structures later expanded into its current 19th-century form. Listed as a historic monument, its most striking features are the casemates — a network of vaulted stone chambers and underground passages carved into the rock, originally designed to shelter troops under siege. The site is famous for its access: the Téléphérique de Grenoble, running since 1934, carries visitors in distinctive transparent bubble gondolas from the city's banks of the Isère river up to the battlements. From the top, the view sweeps over central Grenoble and three surrounding mountain massifs — Chartreuse, Vercors, and Belledonne — making it the defining vantage point of the city.
