Forte Sperone

Forte Sperone crowns the summit of Monte Peralto above Genoa, serving as the central hinge of the city's Mura Nuove — the early-modern defensive ring that once enclosed the entire city. Its angular, ship-bow floor plan was no accident: the fort sits at the exact junction where two separate wall systems meet, one descending toward Val Polcevera and the other toward Val Bisagno, which forced architects to resolve the geometry in what became its signature wedge shape. Listed as an Italian national monument, it represents one of the most distinctive examples of Genoese military architecture. The summit commands sweeping views over the port, the Ligurian Apennines, and on clear days the sea — and the walk up along the restored wall circuit is a favourite route for locals escaping the city below.
