Keningau Oath Stone

The Batu Sumpah — literally 'Oath Stone' — is a commemorative monument in the town of Keningau in the Malaysian state of Sabah. It marks the pledges made by Malaysia to the people of Sabah upon the territory's accession to the Federation of Malaya on 16 September 1963, the date now celebrated as Malaysia Day across the country. The stone stands as one of the few tangible memorials to that founding moment in Sabah's modern history, carrying particular resonance in local civic memory even as it remains little known outside the region. For visitors with an interest in post-colonial Southeast Asian history, it offers a rare, understated point of reflection on the political negotiations that shaped Malaysian Borneo.
