The Bayerisches Armeemuseum is Bavaria's state military history museum, founded in Munich in 1879 at a time when Bavaria still maintained its own army under royal command as a condition of joining the German Empire. Since 1972 it has been based in Ingolstadt, occupying the late-Gothic Neues Schloss as its main building. The permanent collection spans Bavarian military history from the early modern period through the 20th century, with a dedicated First World War exhibition opened in 1994 in the Reduit Tilly fortress. Visitors encounter centuries of uniforms, weapons, field equipment, and regimental flags. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m., and from 10 a.m. on weekends and public holidays; an entry fee applies.
