Beauvale Priory

Beauvale Priory, also known as Beauvale Charterhouse, is the ruined shell of a Carthusian monastery in Nottinghamshire, founded in 1301 and one of only nine Carthusian houses ever established in England. The Carthusian order was defined by strict silence and solitary monastic life; the surviving walls of the church and cloister still convey the austerity of 14th-century Gothic religious architecture. The priory gained grim historical weight when its priors Robert Lawrence and John Houghton were executed in 1535 on the orders of Henry VIII — among the very first martyrs of the English Reformation. Designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the ruins sit quietly within open Nottinghamshire pasture, far from tourist circuits. A dedicated website suggests occasional guided access to the otherwise secluded site.
