Abbaye de l'Étanche

The former Premonstratensian abbey of Notre-Dame de l'Étanche was founded in 1144 in Lamorville, in the Meuse département of Lorraine, and operated for nearly 650 years before being dissolved during the French Revolution in 1790. The Premonstratensians — a canonical order founded by Norbert of Xanten in 1120 — ran the site as a Marian shrine; the name "l'Étanche" references a local spring long considered miraculous. Today only ruins survive, protected as a listed historic monument, their crumbling stonework a quiet record of medieval monastic life in this remote Lorraine valley.
