Alton Castle

Alton Castle is a neo-Gothic hilltop fortress perched above the Churnet Valley in Staffordshire, carrying a defensive history stretching back to Saxon times. A Norman stronghold stood on the same ridge from the 12th century before falling into ruin; the present structure was commissioned by John Talbot, 16th Earl of Shrewsbury, in the mid-19th century — the same aristocrat who developed the estate at nearby Alton Towers. Built in the Romantic neo-Gothic idiom fashionable among Victorian patrons, it features pointed turrets and crenellated parapets that rise dramatically from the wooded valley edge. English Heritage designated it a Grade I listed building in 1967, the highest tier of protection in England. Today it stands quietly apart from the Alton Towers theme park next door, offering panoramic views over the valley and an atmosphere shaped by a thousand years of layered occupation.
