Bedford Village Archeological Site

The Bedford Village Archeological Site, located north of Bedford in central Pennsylvania, preserves the remains of a pre-Columbian village belonging to the Monongahela culture, an Indigenous society that inhabited the region from roughly 1050 to 1635 CE. The Monongahela disappeared largely before sustained European contact — disease or displacement by neighboring groups are the leading explanations, though the precise circumstances remain unresolved. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it is home to Old Bedford Village, an open-air museum featuring reconstructed 18th- and early-19th-century buildings, which layers a living-history experience over the buried archaeological record and makes the site accessible to families and history enthusiasts alike.
