Benedictine Convent of Saint John

The Benedictine Convent of Saint John in Müstair, tucked into the remote Münstertal valley of Graubünden, is among the best-preserved Carolingian monastic complexes in Europe and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Founded around 701 AD — tradition holds that Charlemagne himself ordered its construction — the convent shelters an extraordinary cycle of 9th-century Carolingian and Romanesque frescoes whose completeness and narrative scope are virtually unmatched in the early medieval world. The scenes depicting the life of John the Baptist across the main apse walls are the highlight for art historians and general visitors alike. A living Benedictine community of nuns still occupies and maintains the monastery, giving it an unbroken spiritual continuity stretching over 1,300 years.
