Berà Arch

The Arc de Berà is a well-preserved Roman triumphal arch dating to the 1st century BC, standing directly alongside the ancient Via Augusta — the principal Roman road connecting Rome to Hispania — between the towns of Roda de Berà and Creixell in Tarragona province. Unlike most triumphal arches, it was not built to commemorate a military victory; scholars believe it marked the boundary of a private estate, possibly belonging to Lucius Licinius Sura, a senator of considerable influence under Emperor Trajan. The arch forms part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. It stands immediately beside the modern N-340 highway, making the continuity of its original roadside function strikingly tangible.
