Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe of Orange — located in Orange, not Avignon — is one of the best-preserved Roman triumphal arches in France and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981 as part of the Roman monuments of Orange. The three-arched limestone structure dates to the late Augustan or early Tiberian period, roughly 20 BC to AD 10, and once marked the northern gateway into the Roman colony of Arausio. Its sculptural reliefs are unusually detailed, depicting battle scenes, Gallic prisoners, and heaped weapons — a propagandistic record of Rome's conquest of southern Gaul. Admission is free; the arch stands directly on a public road, making it easily viewable from all sides at any time.
