Roma Akdeğirmen Köprüsü

The Akdeğirmen Köprüsü — 'White Mill Bridge' — is a Roman-era stone-arch structure on the banks of the Ceyhan River near the village of Kızıltahta, roughly 50 kilometres from Adana. Dating back approximately 1,700 years, it is one of the better-preserved Roman constructions in Turkey's southern Çukurova plain, remarkable for having served a dual purpose: both as a river crossing and as a working grain mill actively used by local communities well into the 1960s. Local tradition holds that Alexander the Great ordered a crossing built at this very spot on the Ceyhan — unverified, but a legend that has clung to the site for centuries. Today the structure stands largely intact but without restoration or visitor facilities, reached by a rough access road. Its neglected state is lamented by visitors, yet it is precisely this rawness that gives the mill its austere, time-stopped character.
