Ballincollig Castle

Ballincollig Castle is a ruined Norman stronghold on the southern edge of Ballincollig town in County Cork, built in the aftermath of the Norman invasion of Ireland in the 12th century. The Barrett family, Norman lords who controlled much of the surrounding territory, are the earliest recorded occupants. Despite centuries of decay, the original keep still stands, and a substantial stretch of the curtain wall with two flanking towers survives, giving visitors a clear sense of the castle's former defensive layout. Draped in moss and ivy, the ruin is freely accessible and offers a quiet encounter with medieval Cork beyond the tourist trail.
