Ποικίλη Στοά
Athens
Antiquity
Also known as: Library of Pantainos
A wealthy Athenian named Pantainos endowed his home city with a library and lecture halls around 100 AD. The site at the southeast edge of the Ancient Agora opened onto the sacred way of the Panathenaic procession. The Herulian raid of 267 AD destroyed the building - its stone foundation inscription survives and can be seen today in the Acropolis Museum.
