Ancient Agora of Athens

Also known as: Agora of Athens archaeological site, Athenian agora site

On the Agora, free citizens of Athens gathered from the 5th century BC onwards for assembly, court, and politics - this is where democracy was born. Socrates held his dialogues here; the Stoa Poikile gave Stoicism its name. Today an archaeological park with some of the best-preserved temple architecture in the city.
