Fethiye Mosque

The Fethiye Mosque, on the edge of the Roman Agora in Athens' Plaka, is one of the few surviving Ottoman-era buildings in the city. Its name means Mosque of the Conquest and recalls the Ottoman seizure of Athens in 1456; an initial structure rose soon after, while the present domed building dates largely from the 17th century. It is a single-storey square with semicircular apses and a central dome over smaller half-domes, typical of late Ottoman provincial architecture. After Greek independence it served in turn as a school, barracks, bakery and storeroom before reopening in 2017, following years of restoration, as an exhibition space. Visitors can now step inside to see the cleaned dome and mihrab, a rare glimpse of Ottoman Athens away from the Acropolis crowds.
