Bidwell Park
Bidwell Park stretches more than 11 miles along Big Chico Creek from downtown Chico into the Sierra Nevada foothills, making it one of the largest contiguous municipal parks in the United States. The land sits within the traditional territory of the Mechoopda people, and that layered history runs beneath its oak woodlands and creek corridors. The park divides naturally into three zones: the Lower Park offers developed facilities — picnic areas, creek swimming holes, and paved paths suitable for families; the Middle Park transitions to mixed-use trails for cyclists and hikers; the Upper Park is largely undeveloped, with dense blue oak forest, volcanic rock outcrops, and chaparral that feel closer to backcountry than city green space. Rock climbers work the basalt cliffs in the upper reaches, while an extensive trail network draws trail runners from across the region.
