Black Sea Biosphere Reserve

The Black Sea Biosphere Reserve stretches along the northern Black Sea coast roughly 45 km southwest of Kherson, encompassing the Dnieper river delta with shallow coastal waters, marshlands, dune belts, and steppe landscapes. Founded in 1984 and managed by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, it protects one of the last intact stretches of uncultivated coastal steppe in the northern Black Sea region — a critical counterpoint to the heavily farmed Ukrainian plains surrounding it. The delta's mosaic of reed beds, lagoons, and sandbars serves as a vital stopover for migratory birds on the East European flyway. Visitors encounter a remote, largely undeveloped landscape suited to birdwatching, nature walks, and ecological study in one of Ukraine's most biodiverse wetland systems.
