Bizkaia zubia

The Bizkaia Bridge in Portugalete is the world's oldest operating transporter bridge, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. Opened on 18 July 1893, it spans the mouth of the Nervión estuary between Portugalete and Getxo — not via a conventional roadway, but through a suspended gondola that ferries passengers and vehicles across in just a few minutes. Designed by Basque engineer Alberto de Palacio, a student of Gustave Eiffel, the wrought-iron lattice structure stands as a landmark of 19th-century industrial engineering. The gondola runs daily, and a pedestrian walkway along the upper platform offers open views across the Ría de Bilbao and Portugalete's medieval old town below.
