Black Butte

Black Butte is a solitary stratovolcano rising to 1,963 meters (6,440 ft) in Oregon's Cascade Range, a few miles northwest of the small town of Sisters. Unlike the main Cascade peaks, it stands as a freestanding cone — the product of repeated lava flows that built it independently from the surrounding plateau. A hiking trail winds through dense pine forest to a historic fire lookout at the summit, where clear days open up a sweeping arc of central Oregon's volcanic chain: Mount Jefferson, the Three Sisters, and Mount Washington are all visible from the top. The trail is generally snow-free from June through October and considered a moderate day hike.
