Bisoke

Bisoke (3,711 m) is a dormant stratovolcano in the Virunga range straddling the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is one of eight Virunga volcanoes, a chain that includes the still-active Nyiragongo to the southwest. The mountain's signature feature is a deep crater lake at its summit, ringed by mossy rock and cloud forest — the same misty terrain where Dian Fossey conducted her landmark mountain gorilla research in the adjacent Volcanoes National Park. The ascent from the park headquarters takes roughly four to five hours through dense Afromontane rainforest, with regular sightings of golden monkeys and buffalo. All treks are ranger-guided; the summit frequently clouds over by midday, rewarding early starters with unobstructed views across the volcanic chain.
