Black Mountain

Black Mountain, at 1,263 meters (4,145 feet), is the highest point in Kentucky, rising from Harlan County in the state's southeastern corner along the Virginia border. Part of the Cumberland Mountains within the broader Appalachian chain, it takes the form of a long, heavily forested ridge rather than a sharp peak. The summit is accessible by road, making it one of the more approachable state high points in the eastern United States — a plus for families and casual visitors. An FAA radar dome sits just below the true summit, a reminder of the mountain's line-of-sight advantage over the surrounding valleys. On clear days the ridgeline offers sweeping views over the Appalachian hardwood forest, especially vivid during fall foliage season.
