Bogorodica Ljeviška is the Serbian Orthodox cathedral of Prizren and the episcopal seat of the Eparchy of Raška and Prizren, constructed in the Macedonian School style — a regional synthesis of Byzantine domed architecture and Romanesque elements. King Milutin of Serbia rebuilt the church in the early 14th century over an older early-Christian basilica, commissioning a fresco cycle that remains among the most significant surviving examples of medieval Serbian sacred painting. During Ottoman rule in the 17th century the church was converted into a mosque: its frescoes were plastered over and a minaret added. After 1912 the building was restored and the wall paintings uncovered. It is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble of medieval monuments in Kosovo, making it one of the Balkans' most layered and historically complex sacred sites.
