Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street is the historic main thoroughfare of Nizhny Novgorod, stretching as a pedestrianized promenade through the heart of the old city. Until the 1917 Revolution it was considered the city's noble street — merchants, military officers, and government officials dominated its social life, and the classical and Art Nouveau facades lining the street still reflect that distinguished past. Today it serves as the city's liveliest pedestrian zone, animated by bronze street sculptures, outdoor performers, and a string of cafés and boutiques that draw both locals and visitors on warm evenings.
