Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Nizhny Novgorod

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox church in the Kanavinsky district of Nizhny Novgorod, completed in 1881 on the former site of the city's legendary trade fair — once one of the largest commercial fairs in the entire Russian Empire. Built in the neo-Russian style with neo-Romanesque influences, its gilded onion domes and red-brick masonry are characteristic of late-Tsarist ecclesiastical architecture. Dedicated to the medieval prince Alexander Nevsky, patron saint of Russia, the cathedral is considered one of the city's unofficial landmarks alongside the Kremlin tower and the Chkalov staircase. Regular Orthodox services continue today, and the cathedral's prominent position on the Volga embankment affords broad river views from its surroundings.
