This monument in Gopalganj commemorates Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh, widely known by the honorific Bangabandhu — meaning 'Friend of Bengal'. Rahman led the political movement that culminated in the 1971 Liberation War and the separation of East Pakistan to form independent Bangladesh. Gopalganj was his home district, giving the memorial particular resonance as a site of national memory. For Bangladeshi visitors it represents a pilgrimage of sorts to the roots of the man who shaped the country's modern identity.
