Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Nizhny Novgorod
Nizhny Novgorod
The Daugavpils Boris and Gleb Cathedral is the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral in Latvia and the main church of the Daugavpils and Rēzekne Diocese of the Moscow Patriarchate. Completed in 1904 in the neorussian brick style, the building holds up to 5,000 worshippers — a remarkable capacity reflecting the strong Russian military and civilian presence in the garrison city at the turn of the 20th century. It is dedicated to Saints Boris and Gleb, sons of Kievan Prince Vladimir who were murdered in 1015 and are venerated as the first canonized saints of the Orthodox Eastern Slavs. Designated a national architectural monument of Latvia, its characteristic onion domes mark the city skyline. Services are still held in Church Slavonic, drawing Latgale's sizable Russian-speaking community.
