Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Yalta

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral rises on a hillside above Yalta and stands as one of the most significant examples of neo-Russian ecclesiastical architecture in the region. Construction began in 1891 as a memorial to Tsar Alexander II, assassinated a decade earlier — Saint Alexander Nevsky was venerated as the tsar's patron saint. The church was designed by Nikolai Krasnow, who would later also build the Livadia Palace, and Platon Terebenyev. The consecration on 5 December 1902 was attended by Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, briefly making Yalta a focal point of imperial ceremony. Today the brick church, crowned with gilded onion domes, holds regular Russian Orthodox services and offers a striking elevated silhouette above the resort town below.
