Brandaris Lighthouse

The Brandaris on the island of Terschelling is the oldest operational lighthouse in the Netherlands, its current brick tower dating to 1594. A predecessor structure was already guiding ships through the treacherous shallows of the Waddenzee toward Amsterdam as early as 1323, making this one of the longest continuously used navigation points in northern Europe. The name Brandaris likely derives from Saint Brandarius, the medieval patron of the village of West-Terschelling, though a competing legend ties it to the Irish seafaring monk Saint Brendan — a connection that remains unproven. Listed as a Rijksmonument, the tower stands as the visual anchor of the island's flat dune landscape. Visitors who climb to the top are rewarded with a broad panorama across the Waddenzee and the North Sea beyond.
