Brest Fortress

Brest Fortress, constructed from brick beginning in 1836 at the confluence of the Mukhavets and Bug rivers, stands as Belarus's most visited historical monument. The site carries dual layers of world-historical significance: it was here that the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed in March 1918, pulling Russia out of World War I. More deeply etched into Soviet and Belarusian memory is the fortress's defense in the summer of 1941, when a small garrison mounted weeks of resistance against the German invasion — one of the earliest and most symbolically charged battles of the Eastern Front. Visitors today walk freely through the vast grounds, exploring ruined casemates, the dramatic Hero Fortress monument, and several on-site museums dedicated to the fortress's military history.
